The inspiration for this print comes from a lifelong fascination with archaeology. I was raised in a family of both professional and self-taught archaeologists, and growing up along the bluffs of the Missouri River, our land was scattered with Native American artifacts, burial mounds, and ancient sites. Family vacations often revolved around archaeological sites and ancient ruins, nurturing a deep respect for the stories held within a landscape.
That passion eventually brought my sister to Hawaiʻi as an archaeologist, and a year later it brought me here. During my first year on Oʻahu, we spent countless days hiking in search of the island's few known petroglyph sites. Although she later returned to Missouri, this print is an ode to the curiosity our family shared and to the profound connection we have always felt with places shaped by those who came long before us.
The artwork draws from a personal study of the petroglyphs at Puʻu Loa on Hawaiʻi Island, meaning "Hill of Long Life." Home to more than 23,000 kiʻi pōhaku (petroglyphs), it is the largest known petroglyph field in the Hawaiian Islands.
