Palaka is a historical Hawaiian fabric.  Palaka is a woven cotton that dates back to the 1800s.  The word "palaka" is actually a transliteration of the English word "frock", the term used for loose fitting, long-sleeved work shirts worn by the American and British sailors who came to Hawaii.  During the 1920s, palaka was made of 100% woven cotton which was very thick and strong.  Many workers in Hawaii used this fabric in the pineapple and sugar cane fields  Today you can find Palaka clothing on Hawaiian musicians, celebrities, cowboys (paniolo), and even in parades.

The mai`a leaf, represents one of the earliest staple plants brought by Polynesian canoe settlers to Hawai’i.  A beautiful person might be compared to a young banana leaf.  There are more than 50 varieties, and the mai`a leaves were used for umbrellas, house roofs, tablecloths, foot coverings, packing material, and imu (earth oven) covering.  Mai`a provides an easy gift for friends and an emergency food supply when necessary.
