Palaka / Check

The traditional Hawaiian Palaka shirt was made of a checkered denim and was the standard plantation work shirt in the early 1900's. It was around this time that Hawaii was really growing strong as an exporter of plantation crops, like sugarcane, coffee, and pineapples. The style was a short sleeved button up, made with checkered fabric and side slits. It was a comfy shirt to work in and the style was adopted from the cultures of the plantation workers. This is my take on it. Go ahead, pop your collar! |
